Bauhaus Hardware Store

Facade in motion

If you think of Bauhaus in Berlin, you automatically associate this with Gropius. With the new outlet of the Bauhaus AG designed by Müller Reimann Architects, Berlin has another impressive association. The result is a hall construction with an extravagant facade that gives the building an impressive depth.

The sculptural facade consists of parametric Alucobond cassettes on a SYSTEA substructure and extends over the entire 22,000 square meter building. The facade reflects the light and changes its color and appearance depending on the weather and time of day due to different incidence of light.

Depending on the position of the sun and the viewing angle, the façade changes from a smooth, two-dimensional image of large silver and small light-blue diamonds to diagonal stripes that appear to be interwoven with each other, right up to the actual three-dimensional silver shell.
