Fo-Guang-Shan-Temple Berlin

Special construction unites opposites

The impressive Fo Guang Shan temple in Berlin-Mitte harmonises traditional Asian teachings with modern European architecture. Fo Guang Shan means “Buddha’s Mountain of Light”, which is reflected in the design by French architects Rolland & Associés with a transparent ribbed roof and emphasised by the circular opening.

The 500 square metre ceramic facade of the new building radiates a warmth with its golden-copper colour, which nevertheless makes the imposing structure appear friendly and inviting. The corrugated profile in six different widths was designed by the architects and runs across the entire facade surface as well as the entrance area.

Secure hold for the facade of the Fo Guang Shan temple
SYSTEA developed a special design for the vertically mounted ceramic elements from manufacturer NBK. Stainless steel brackets with short vertical T-profiles, continuous horizontal Z and hat profiles and NBK clamps were used. NBK baguettes were used in some areas. The vertical rectangular low-lying baguettes divide the facade into segments. They were fastened with special brackets tested for this purpose. The construction can therefore also absorb transverse forces from impact loads and wind.

An inviting meeting place
The cube-shaped building, realised in collaboration with Arad-Zareh Architects, has a total area of around 3,100 square metres and comprises various areas, such as the main hall for teaching and meditation, various rooms for yoga and tai chi, a canteen kitchen with associated dining room and a Zen garden at the rear of the site.
