Swimming and leisure pool Hörnbad

Swimming pool functioning as a beacon development

The diagonal setting of the north and south facing facades calls up associations with the shape of a ship’s hull. Based on its position between the Old Town and the city’s Gaarden district, the building fulfils a beacon function for developing this part of the city. Interesting perspectives are revealed to observers, as soon as they pass the Gablenzbrücke, situated nearby.

The layout structure describes a large number ‘1’ on the prominent plot of land to the south of the Hörn, the tip of the harbour. This urban planning characteristic is governed by diverse environmental and property specifications.

All functional and development aspects had to be optimised, in order to still be able to realise ambitious spacious planning requirements. Designed over three storeys in its south-eastern portion, the building rises to comprise four storeys closer to the Gablenzbrücke bridge – conditional on the position of the diving pool area. By these means, not only was the required boundary realised closer to the bridge approach, but at the same time an identity defining roofscape and banked additional building height were achieved.
