Cruise terminal “Ostseekai”

A successful combination of old and new

The cruise terminal “Ostseekai” in Kiel Fjord inlet has been extended by a second berth and serves as a starting point for several thousand passengers every year, who wish to spend their holidays on the high seas. The existing and the new terminal building are nevertheless perceived as an ensemble, due to conversion and expansion. Even the largest ships can now dock there. Two luxury liners can be dealt at the same time in one terminal each, emphasising this important economic location in Kiel.

Cruise terminal Baltic Quay captivates with its curved facade
The newly constructed two-storey terminal building with overall floor space of 3,700 m² was designed by architects eins:eins Architekten Hillenkamp & Roselius, and realised by the company SCHRAG Fassaden. The building complex is a visual highlight, streamlined to fit in with its surroundings. Wide window facades afford passengers an impressive view of the quayside. The partially curved facade with similarly curved large-format suspended ceilings connected below glisten metallic silver according to the daylight, reminding us of the interplay of colours and waves on the surface of the water.

Extensive Alucobond composite panels across a large area were selected as facade cladding elements.

SYSTEA SZ20 profile system with wall brackets beneath it were used to securely fix facade elements in place and appropriate carrier profiles made of high-grade aluminium were used. Suspended ceilings with 1,100 mm suspension height were realised using a special construction based on the ALWI-S system.

Consultants for the system including realisation of static engineering were directed towards collaboration with SYSTEA by the variety of choice and as well as supplier reliability, alongside proven system safety in conjunction with material resistance to corrosive attack, such as by sea air.
