B:HUB office complex, Berlin

Eye-catching 300 metre facade for a modern office building

How can we succeed in realising a stylish office complex on a tube-shaped plot of land, which in spite of its impressive length does not allow any monotony to develop? The architect’s office Barkow Leibinger succeeded and achieved this in a striking manner, with building complex B:HUB in eastern Berlin. The office building which is up to ten storeys high, managed to create this with its balconies, loggias and roof terraces running in zigzag alignment and offering an attractive appearance through terracotta frontage.

The architects selected glazed white and different sized ceramic elements from NBK for the facade, in order to emphasize the stylish loft character of the office complex. Special NBK brackets were used to precisely fit alignment of all details along the 8,850 m² facade front, as well as at numerous corner and pilaster elements.

To achieve the required structural stability for substructure and facade elements, an entire special solution was developed in close cooperation with installers, and was realised using adapted stainless-steel wall brackets and aluminium sheets with folds and bends, see sketch. Parapet elements were installed using stainless-steel holder brackets as well as a vertical sub-structure with horizontal top hat profiles.

Alongside offices, the building contains among other things a staff canteen, cafeteria, kindergarten as well as a supermarket, which acts as a source of supplies not only for the building’s users, but also for local residents. No matter, from which direction one approaches B:HUB, an imposing perspective is guaranteed.

All structural elements were manufactured as special solutions.
