Wooden high-rise „SKAIO“

Wooden high-rise building „SKAIO“ reaches for the heights

As part of the Federal Garden Show in Heilbronn, not just attractive horticulture, floral and garden art was created, but also the first wooden high-rise building in Germany, rising believe it or not to a height of 34 metres. The SKAIO 10 storey wooden high-rise building was realised in a hybrid construction method, comprising commercial floor space such as a bakery and 60 residential units, amongst other things for people with physical limitations. The spacious roof terrace makes it possible for residents to meet up in a causal and leisurely environment.

The architect’s office Kaden⁺ GmbH which specialises in wooden constructions, created a textbook example of sustainable construction, with this by now highly distinguished high-rise building. The greater part of construction is made out of wood. The basement level as well as the stairwell were realised using reinforced concrete. External walls made out of wooden structural framework elements were fitted with a suspended, back-ventilated facade and 1,700 m² of POHL Europlate® aluminium cassettes, which grant the building a modern, even outward appearance.

The subdued look of the roof terrace is provided by 8 mm thick Equitone cladding panels, which are secured using the SYSTEA profile system ALWI-S, and as visible fix.

SYSTEA’s UBE25 profile system with aluminium wall brackets was used for the required stability of cladding elements. Along with its safety, its speed also scored points during construction. Each storey of the building was able to be built in just one week, due to the wooden construction method.

The extraordinary residential construction project SKAIO represents sustainability not just through its use of wood, a sustainable building material. Also the fact, that 100 per cent of structural components can be stripped down, deinstalled and returned to the raw material cycle again, which allows the building to also stand out inwardly, in this newly created part of the city „Neckarbogen“.
