Rear-ventilated ceramic facade for the extension of Ofterdingen Town Hall

Ofterdingen Town Hall:

A ceramic relief for the modern age

The extension to Ofterdingen Town Hall has created a modern administrative building that consciously and respectfully adjoins a listed existing building from the 16th century.

The central design element is a rear-ventilated rainscreen ceramic facade based on the SYSTEA TC110 profile system, which combines lightness, durability, and architectural precision.

The facade fulfills both functional and design tasks and strengthens the identity of the new administrative location.

Varied profiled panel elements were used over an area of 660 m², whose relief appearance creates a dynamic surface structure depending on the incidence of light.

This is complemented by 4,000 running meters of ceramic baguettes, which were placed in front of the window areas. These act as a semi-transparent design element that emphasizes the architecture, allows sufficient daylight into the interior, and at the same time visually continues the relief structure of the panels. With the chosen color “cream,” the new building blends harmoniously into the listed ensemble.

Challenge

The historic town hall, built in 1523, had reached its spatial limits. An extension was sought that would create additional workspaces without dominating the listed building.

Special requirements arose from:

  • the integration into a listed ensemble
  • the planned timber frame construction of the new building
  • high requirements for fire protection, weight, durability, and low maintenance
  • the desire for a high-quality, durable facade solution with a unique architectural expression

Solution

The new building, designed by Glück + Partner GmbH from Stuttgart, is attached at a 90° angle to the existing town hall and, despite its significantly larger volume, remains slim and unobtrusive.

The SYSTEA profile system TC110-V for vertically arranged ceramic panels was used as the facade system, which was combined with ceramic panels from Tonality.

The concealed fixing of the vertically arranged Tonality baguettes was solved with the aid of a special construction.

The single-shell ceramic elements are particularly light and ideal for timber construction. Due to their low weight, the substructure could be realized with fewer anchors.

The internal insulation keeps the installation height of the facade low and supports an economical overall structure.

The design of the facade was developed specifically for this project:

  • Profiled ceramic panels with a relief surface
  • Ceramic baguettes installed in front of window areas
  • A uniform, natural color scheme in the shade “cream”

The result is a modern extension with a dynamic, lively ceramic facade that blends harmoniously into the listed surroundings while adding a contemporary accent.

The result

The relief structure of the ceramic panels creates a changing play of light and shadow depending on the time of day. The approximately 4,000 linear meters of baguettes structure the gable end and window areas, allow daylight to enter the interior, and act as semi-transparent facade elements.

The facade also impresses with:

  • High weather and UV resistance
  • Very good fire protection properties
  • Long service life spanning several decades
  • Easy cleaning, e.g., in the event of contamination or vandalism

The extension thus presents itself as a sustainable, functional, and high-quality administrative location that convincingly combines old and new.

The TC110-V profile system at a glance

The TC110-V is a system developed by SYSTEA for the concealed fastening of vertically arranged terracotta or ceramic tiles.

Cream-colored Tonality ceramic tiles were used in this project.

Advantages of TC110-V:

  • Precise fixing: The system enables the secure, concealed fastening of cladding elements to support profiles using clips.
  • Customized: Horizontal cap profiles that are precisely tailored to the respective cladding.
