Microsonic Headquarters

Speaking facade

The new Microsonic building on Dortmund’s Phoenix Lake impresses with its golden shine and a facade of copper, steel and concrete. The company is one of the three largest manufacturers of ultrasonic sensor technology in the world. A three-storey building with production and storage areas, laboratories for development and an office floor for management, sales and administration was built on the approximately 4,300 m² site.

The design of the façade panels reflects the history of the company and the site. The sheets, made of an alloy of copper, aluminium and zinc with a shiny golden appearance, take up the function of the building as a production site for high-tech electronics and will change over time, as will the Phoenixsee site.
For this purpose, Microsonic employees have recorded various word cycles, which were developed together with the local artist Sebastian Freytag and converted into a whole pattern by a computer program of the architects. The recorded words are found as graphic elements, seemingly randomly scattered between the otherwise evenly perforated façade panels.
