Residential building Berlin

Greener living with photovoltaics

HOWOGE is one of the largest municipal housing associations in Berlin and attaches great importance to sustainable construction and refurbishment. This was impressively demonstrated in Berlin-Lichtenberg with the comprehensive refurbishment of a total of four building units with 104 flats at Rhinstraße 129-135.

The architectural firm SPP Schüttauf + Persike Planungsgesellschaft was commissioned with the planning. The refurbishment of the existing 11-storey building from 1976 was carried out by the company B&O Gebäudetechnik. Among other things, the façade was insulated and fitted with white Alucobond panels covering a total of 4,000 square metres using the profile system ALWI-S. Stainless steel wall brackets were used to minimise heat loss at certain points.

Solar panels for a green energy system were placed on the roof, which are not visible to the observer. As the visually visible ‘crowning glory’ of the energy-efficient refurbishment, the south wall of the residential building was fitted with anthracite grey photovoltaic modules, which were attached to the support profiles with clips using the UKLA-BIPV profile system. They are arranged so that they are located behind or next to each vertical panel joint. All BIPV clips are visibly screwed in from the outside and can therefore be fully inspected. The dimensions of the building-integrated photovoltaic elements were 1050 x 1390 mm, similar to the Alucobond panels.
The BIPV elements were arranged in such a way as to avoid shading by neighbouring buildings. This results in an interesting pattern between the Alucobond panels and the BIPV elements.

Solar energy is now optimally utilised on 350 square metres. The photovoltaic modules form an interesting contrast to the white Alucobond panels. The residential building is an excellent example of how people and the environment can benefit without neglecting the visual appearance.
