New building at the J.P. Pescatore Foundation in Luxembourg

Precision facade technology for sophisticated architecture

With the expansion of the Fondation J.P. Pescatore on the Kirchberg in Luxembourg, a residential building was realized that combines architectural sophistication with technically advanced facade solutions. The new building blends into the ensemble while simultaneously placing high demands on the planning, detailing, and execution of the building envelope.

The design by FABECKARCHITEKTES is based on the further development of the existing architectural vocabulary. Proportion, structure, and facade rhythm are aligned with the existing building, while the choice of materials and facade construction allow for a contemporary interpretation.
The building layout around a central piazza creates clear visual connections and defines functional open spaces. For the facade design, this required a nuanced consideration of the views as well as precise coordination of the facade surfaces in terms of light, shading, and use.

Design

The building envelope was designed using a rear-ventilated rainscreen facade.
The facade cladding made of Rieder fibreC meets high standards for weather protection, vapor permeability, and durability. At the same time, it enables a uniform facade appearance with clean joint patterns and precise lines. Vertical facade elements in the form of fins and pilaster strips structure the building envelope and require detailed planning of the facade sub-structure as well as the fixing points.

Requirements for the Substructure and Installation

The combination of large-format facade panels and vertical facade elements placed high demands on the supporting structure and the construction planning.

In addition to safe load transfer, the following aspects were crucial:
  • precise adjustability
  • exact alignment
  • durable, secure fixing of the facade cladding
  • installation-friendly, cost-effective design

SYSTEA UBE NG combined with a custom design

The SYSTEA UBE NG profile system, which was specifically designed for heavy facade cladding, was used as the sub-structure. Aluminum wall brackets ensure a corrosion-resistant connection to the building structure. The support profiles guarantee even load distribution and form the basis for concealed fixing of the facade panels. This creates a smooth, continuous facade appearance without visible fixing points.

Project-specific custom solutions were developed for the implementation of the fins. Tailor-made angle brackets on the clamps enable stable support of the vertical elements and ensure their precise positioning within the facade structure. Special clips with integrated retaining brackets ensure additional installation security and prevent individual facade elements from accidentally loosening or detaching. These details are particularly important for the long-term operational safety and ease of maintenance of the facade.

The Result

With approximately 2,800 square meters of facade area and about 1,200 linear meters of facade elements, the project required precise coordination between planning, component manufacturing, and installation.
Close collaboration between architects, facade planners, system manufacturers, and installers ensured smooth implementation and high-quality execution.

The project demonstrates how sophisticated architecture can be realized economically and precisely using technically mature facade systems. The ventilated curtain wall facade meets both design and building physics requirements and offers long-term reliability in terms of weather protection, energy efficiency, and maintenance.
The combination of Rieder fibreC facade cladding and the SYSTEA sub-structure enables a durable, flexible, and technically robust facade solution. Customized special constructions for the facade layout underscore the freedom of design and demonstrate the capabilities of modern facade systems in detail.
