The Center for Deep Sea Research (ZfT)
In the heart of Bremen, the center functions as an interdisciplinary research center for marine sciences – a place where science, technology and international cooperation come together under one roof. The inauguration ceremony for this impressive facility took place on March 5, 2025.
SYSTEA was commissioned with the realization of the facade sub structure, thus contributing to the design and technical excellence of the building. The versatile BETA Universal II sub-structure system was used, which meets the highest standards of flexibility, stability and sustainability. This system is made up of a stainless steel bar system, which enables reduced thermal bridges. The bar system is combined with an aluminum profile system.
A special construction was used for this project due to the cladding with Corten steel cassettes.
Aesthetics influenced by nature
The facade of the new building is a visual highlight: clad with Corten steel, also known as weathered steel, facade panels that deliberately oxidize during construction, the result is a distinctive facade that is shaped by nature.
Convincing technology – BETA Universal II
For the installation of the facade panels, the choice fell on the BETA Universal II system from SYSTEA – a proven substructure system for ventilated curtain wall facades. It offers maximum flexibility, as it can be used for visible as well as for concealed fixing panels – ideal for sophisticated architectural projects with individual design specifications.
The advantages of BETA Universal II at a glance:
- Can be combined with various claddings made of ceramic, fibre cement, HPL, glass and natural stone
- High load-bearing capacity and dimensional stability
- Suitable for visible and concealed fixing
- Simple and economical installation, even with complex facade geometries
Adapted to customer requirements
The flexibility of BETA Universal II came into its own at the Center for Deep-Sea Research in Bremen: to enable the Corten steel cassettes to be installed, fabricator Kohlmeyer Fassadenbau combined the BETA Universal II bar system with a vertical U-profile in 50/50/50/6 with notches for the cassettes, so that the ideas of the architects Haslob Kruse + Partner Architekten BDA could be implemented without restrictions – at the same time, the building fulfils the highest technical safety and sustainability aspects.
Sustainability right from the start
The BETA Universal II system itself consists of high-quality stainless steel materials in combination with aluminum support profiles. It is designed for maximum durability and recyclability – a system that is not only technically impressive, but also ecologically sound.
SYSTEA – facade expertise for the future
With the project in Bremen, SYSTEA once again demonstrates how design standards and technical precision can be perfectly combined. Thanks to the flexible BETA II universal system and close collaboration with architects, planners and fabricators, facades are created that have a lasting effect – both visually and functionally.
