Boiler house in Leverkusen: Perfectly integrated new construction

A historic site is being revitalized: The boiler house Leverkusen is an architecturally sophisticated new building that combines modern functionality with the raw, honest charm of the industrial area.

The ground floor serves as commercial space, while 32 modern, so-called serviced apartments have been built on the upper floors.

For the unique Corten steel facade, SYSTEA supplied a secure, concealed fastening substructure that meets the highest standards of aesthetics, safety, and durability.

The architectural vision

The boiler house in Leverkusen is a new building that was deliberately constructed on the site of the former steam boiler house. It pays homage to the industrial character of the railway town and creates a modern connection to the neighboring buildings.

Oxen Architekten from Cologne opted for a combination of materials that reflect this rugged charm: corten steel, dark aluminum/glass elements, and dark plaster.

Through controlled corrosion, the Corten steel forms a dense, rusty patina that gives the building its warm, distinctive aesthetic while also being highly functional. The building houses commercial space on the ground floor and modern, fully furnished apartments on a total of three upper floors.

The main technical challenge was to securely fasten the heavy steel plates without the fasteners detracting from the visual impact of the unique material surface. This called for a concealed fastening solution that would meet the highest static requirements.

The official opening of the building, which has a usable area of around 4,200 m², took place on September 1, 2024.

The SYSTEA solution: UBE DUO

For this demanding project, SYSTEA supplied a substructure that is optimally matched to the cladding material in terms of load-bearing capacity, corrosion resistance, and installation flexibility:
SYSTEA’s UBE DUO profile system was chosen for the invisible and secure fastening of the heavy steel cladding.

In view of the special wall cladding made of Corten steel and the requirement for maximum durability and corrosion resistance, heavy-duty stainless steel wall brackets from SYSTEA were chosen.
The use of stainless steel wall brackets also ensures significantly smaller thermal bridges than comparable aluminum wall brackets, which is beneficial in terms of sustainability. These were combined with our robust T-profile 65/50 to safely support the high loads of the steel panels.

The contractor, Minnebusch GmbH Dach & Fassadenbau from Oberhausen, carried out the installation of the approx. 350 m² facade area precisely and efficiently.

The UBE DUO profile system

UBE DUO is a system developed by SYSTEA for concealed fastening of facade panels, which is ideal for heavy and large-format cladding materials such as Corten steel in this case.

Advantages:

  • Precise adjustment: The system allows easy adjustment of the panels using adjusting screws on the back of the cladding elements, which is crucial for a perfect and straight joint pattern on this sophisticated facade.
  • Aesthetics and safety: The completely concealed fastening ensures a consistent, homogeneous facade appearance that shows off the rough materiality of Corten steel to its best advantage while also meeting the structural requirements.

By using UBE DUO, the Leverkusen boiler house was able to combine visionary architecture with the necessary maximum level of technical safety and corrosion resistance.
